On January 4, party staffers gathered in front of Prime Minister and DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama and Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa to commemorate the first working day of 2010.

Hatoyama addressed the assembled workers, saying “Last year was truly an epoch-making year…Thanks to your concerted efforts, we were able to win the general election in the spirit of creating a mode of government for the people. We were finally able to bring about a change of government.”

Hatoyama went on to say, “A change of government is not a goal in itself; rather we have obtained a means that will serve as an opportunity to create government for the people.” He stressed that “This is where things really start” and called on party staffers to make even greater efforts toward realizing a mode of government controlled by politicians.

Furthermore, Hatoyama said that “This year is a crucial year” and touched on this summer’s House of Councillors elections, saying “The DPJ must work to obtain victory, under the supervision of Secretary General Ozawa. This is also a way of enabling us to further enhance the creation of politics for the people. It is my sincere hope that each of you will make every effort in your various capacities in the belief that this is the most important year in Japan’s history.” He added that the government would also exert every effort and work together with the party, and went on to say, “We promise to thoroughly create an economics for the sake of the people, for the sake of human beings. Let’s work together to achieve this.”

A toast was proposed by Senior Vice Secretary General Yoshimitsu Takashima, and Chair of the Administration Committee Tenzo Okumura served as MC.
