On January 21, Prime Minister and DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama responded to reporters questions on a variety of issues, including the debate that day in the House of Councillors Committee on Budget and the Futenma issue.
Hatoyama was first asked for his impressions regarding that day’s debate with LDP President Tanigaki in the Diet. He responded, “I communicated my own opinions sincerely. For the Japanese people, I would like to carry out thorough policy debate and enact the supplementary budget in order that everyone’s lives can be improved as soon as possible.”
Next, with regard to the issue of Futenma base, Hatoyama was asked, since he had said, in the same Diet committee, that he would decide on the final location for the base by May, whether that included reaching an agreement with the United States on the issue. He made it clear that this deadline would include reaching an agreement with the United States, saying, “Currently, I have discussed the matter with Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirano, and issued instructions, and decided that we will we decide on our final position as an administration by May.”
