On January 26, the DPJ Haiti Earthquake Aid Needs Assessment Mission, consisting of International Department Director-General and Mission leader Yukihisa Fujita and member of the House of Representatives Nobuhiko Suto, spoke to reporters, presenting a report based on their assessment mission to Haiti, which detailed conditions on the ground and the aid needs there, and talked about their visit to the disaster zone.
The two Diet members also referred to the fact that compared with other countries, the reporting by the Japanese media on the situation in Haiti was extremely sparse, and called on the assembled media organizations to inform the Japanese people of the truly terrible conditions in the disaster-stricken nation, stressing that “the eyes of the world are focused on Haiti”.
The two also expressed the opinion that as a nation commonly affected by earthquakes, there were many areas in which Japan could provide cooperation. As well as rating the operations of the Japan Disaster Rescue Team highly, they also pointed out that the team’s ability to participate in overseas disaster aid efforts is currently limited by a whole variety of restrictions.
The original Japanese report is available on the DPJ website at :

A partial English translation of the report will be available on the DPJ website later this week.
