On February 4, the official campaign for the 17th Nagasaki gubernatorial election got underway, following the end of the term of the incumbent governor. Seven fresh faces declared their candidacies, initiating what is likely to be a fierce 17-day campaign, culminating with polling on February 21.
The candidate recommended by the DPJ, the Social Democratic Party and the People’s New Party kicked off their campaign in front of 500 people at 9 am in Nagasaki City.
DPJ Election Campaign Strategy Headquarters Chair Hajime Ishii gave an address on behalf of DPJ party headquarters, saying, “We must do our utmost to win. The DPJ is engaging in a great task, while carrying a burden inherited from the long years of LDP rule. Less than 5 months have passed [since the change of government], but in one or two years there will be big changes in lives of the Japanese people. Goodbye, old-style LDP. Hello, new-look DPJ. Let’s join together as one to work toward victory.”
DPJ member of the House of Representatives for Nagasaki No 2 Constituency, Eriko Fukuda acted as MC, and speeches were also given by election campaign manager Kiyoshi Tsukamoto, member of the House of Representatives Yoshiaki Takaki, and representatives from the SDP and the Japanese Trade Union Confederation.
The rally closed with three rousing cheers and the 17-day election campaign got underway.
