On February 17, Diet members belonging to the DPJ Youth Department held a discussion forum with a visiting delegation from the Laos People’s Democratic Republic, consisting of prospective senior officials for the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and administration.
At the meeting, following a few words of welcome from the various DPJ Diet members, Youth Department Vice Director General Hidenori Tachibana said, “I have heard that Laos is a country overflowing with future potential. There are many things that the younger generation in Japan can learn from your country with respect to involvement in the political process, including the fact that you have the right to vote from the age of 18.” He continued, “Let’s deepen the bilateral exchanges between our nations and improve ourselves through friendly rivalry.”
Following this, a briefing took place on the theme of “The view of the DPJ Youth Department regarding international exchanges with Asian nations and the current activities of the Youth Department” and following the briefing, a lively discussion took place, focusing on such topics as Japan’s assistance to Laos and the Japanese electoral system.
The meeting was chaired by member of the House of Representatives Tsutomu Takamura, and member of the House of Representatives Naoto Sakaguchi also participated.
