On March 18, DPJ International Department Director General Yukihisa Fujita welcomed a delegation from the Korea Peace Forum co-chaired by former Korean Unification Minister Lim Dong-won and Professor Emeritus of Seoul University Paik Nak-chung, and exchanged views. The meeting was also attended by DPJ members of the House of Representatives Tsuyoshi Saito, Tetsuo Inami and International Department Vice Director-General Joe Nakano.

At the start of the meeting, Fujita mentioned that the Republic of Korea was the first country to be officially visited by Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama following his inauguration, and welcomed the delegation to Japan.

The visitors expressed their sympathy and expectations for the concept of an East Asian Community that is being proposed by Prime Minister Hatoyama, and a lively discussion took place relating to the resolution of various issues relating to North Korea, including its abductions of foreign nationals and development of nuclear weapons.

Fujita agreed that the process of reconciliation and cooperation through the “active conscience” proposed by the Korea Peace Forum was important for the peace and prosperity of East Asia.
