On April 20, Senior Vice Secretary General Yoshimitsu Takashima held his regular press conference at party headquarters. In response to a question regarding the Futenma base issue, he said, “It is important for the coalition government to first agree on the proposal they consider the best as the government proposal. Following that, the way things should take shape is that the government and the ruling party should unite to obtain the understanding of the Japanese people and the United States.”

Takashima went on to comment that it would be difficult for any region in Japan to accept the relocation of the base, and expressed the opinion with regard to Tokunoshima that “considering the circumstances of the anti-base rally, it will be difficult to persuade [residents to accept the base.]”

Takashima also commented on the forthcoming Diet debate, saying such important legislation as the bill to establish political leadership, the Diet reform bill and the postal reform bill still remained on the agenda, and that the party would like to liaise to ensure the Diet passes the legislation on schedule.
