On May 13, the Chair of the Committee on Financial Affairs in House of Representatives, DPJ Diet member Koichiro Gemba, met with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ), led by Vice President William R. Bishop Jr. The two sides reaffirmed the importance of cooperation in the financial and economic fields, and a lively discussion took place on the way in which English education should be conducted in order for Japan to exercise leadership in the Asian economy.

At the start of the meeting, the ACCJ side commented that the finance industry could be said to be entering a period of transition, including the recent turmoil in the markets, and expressed their expectations that Japan, as the financial centre of Asia, could play an active role in the creation of new international rules.
The DPJ side stated that in order for Japan to be active in the international community it is desirable for young Japanese to spread their wings overseas, but explained that recently the numbers of Japanese university students studying abroad has been dropping, and it was therefore desirable to place emphasis on English education until the end of high school.

The meeting was also attended by International Department Director General Yukihisa Fujita, Vice Director General Kuniko Tanioka and member of the House of Representatives Mieko Nakabayashi.
