Kan nominated as 94th Prime Minister of Japan

On June 4, an election to nominate the new Prime Minister took place in the House of Representatives. DPJ President Naoto Kan gained 313 out of a total of 477 votes, and was nominated by the House of Representatives as the 94th Prime Minister of Japan.

At the start of the session, Speaker Takahiro Yokomichi announced that he had received notification from Prime Minister Hatoyama stating it had been decided that the Hatoyama Cabinet would tender their resignation en masse. Following this, the Speaker announced the start of the nomination process, voting took place, and Prime Minister Kan was nominated. Kan was later also nominated as Prime Minister in the House of Councillors, gaining 123 out of 237 votes.
