On June 19, DPJ Secretary General Yukio Edano, speaking to reporters in Tokushima Prefecture, responded to a question regarding the possibility of raising the consumption tax. He expressed the opinion that at this stage, even if nonpartisan discussions were to start immediately, this was not a topic on which a conclusion could soon be reached, and that it was necessary to start the debate toward realizing fiscal reconstruction, saying, “It will take one or more years to establish such a system. If we don’t start preparations soon, we will not be able to ask the electorate’s verdict on this at the next general election.”
