On July 12, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku held his regular press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office. Regarding the content of the meeting between Prime Minister and DPJ President Naoto Kan and the party’s Secretary General Yukio Edano that had been held earlier that same day, Sengoku revealed one point had related to administrative continuity, and the fact that there were many policy pledges included in the party Manifesto, many of which needed to be realized as soon as possible considering the situation facing Japan, and that the two had discussed how to achieve those policy goals in light of the forthcoming Diet schedule.

In view of the upcoming election for DPJ President, scheduled to be held during September, and on the changes to the members of the party executive in the Upper House, Sengoku said, “It is my opinion that it is basically desirable from the point of view of administrative continuity for [Minister of Justice Keiko Chiba (defeated in the House of Councillors election)] to continue at her post [up until then].”
