Sengoku says DPJ will call for cooperation from PNP, SDP

On July 14, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku held a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Asked whether the DPJ would cooperate with Your Party regarding civil service reform, Sengoku said that prior to taking up his current role he had spent much time discussing this very matter in his previous post as Minister of State for Civil Service Reform. Based on this experience, he expressed the opinion that Your Party’s statement that “Civil service reform is necessary” suggests that the directions of the two parties are in harmony on this issue. However, he went on to say that “Without discussion it is impossible to say to what degree they will accept basic labour rights [for civil servants] or whether their stance is that such rights should not be granted.”

Furthermore, in connection with the news that the People’s New Party has asked the Social Democratic Party to form a joint parliamentary caucus, or kaiha, Sengoku was asked how the DPJ intended to cooperate with the Social Democratic Party in future in terms of Diet affairs. He replied, “This is not just restricted to the Social Democratic Party, but it is only natural that we would like to thoroughly explain individual legislative proposals, particularly those that still remain to be dealt with from the previous Diet session, to both parties, and call for their cooperation.” In addition to setting forth this basic stance, he revealed that the DPJ administration would, depending on conditions in Japan, call for the cooperation of all parties in the case of important legislation that must pass the Diet, even if this necessitated compromise and amendments.
