On August 5, a General Meeting of DPJ Diet Members was held, and the date for the election of the DPJ President, the convening of an extraordinary party convention for the election, and the election campaign committee regulations were formally approved.

In the meeting, following an address by the Chair of the General Meeting of DPJ Diet Members Ryu Matsumoto, Secretary General Yukio Edano announced that the Standing Officers Council had decided the following points with regard to the election: 1) the election for President of the DPJ would be held on September 14, and that postal votes would be counted on the previous day, September 13, 2) an extraordinary party convention would be held on September 14 in order to elect the party President, and 3) candidates for the post of party President would be restricted to incumbent Diet members, as has always been the case.

Following this the Chair of the Central President’s Election Administration Committee Tadamasa Kodaira announced Election Administration Committee regulations including the rule that each candidate in the election needs the endorsement of between 20 and 25 Diet members, and procedures regarding the registration of eligible voters, and for checking and raising objections regarding the roll of eligible voters. Kodaira called for cooperation from Diet members, saying, “The election for President is a good opportunity to promote the DPJ and so I ask for your cooperation.”

The various announcements were formally approved by the General Meeting.
