On September 2, the DPJ Youth Department held discussions with a delegation of young researchers from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
At the start of the meeting, the Deputy Director-General of the Youth Department Hidenori Tachibana welcomed the visitors, introducing comments made by Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management of which Tachibana was himself an alumni. Matsushita predicted that “the 21st century will be the era of Asia. China and Japan will play a key role.” Tachibana said that, as this prediction shows every sign of coming true, “I would like us, the members of the younger generation, to play a key role in constructing a new Asian era.” He said that the party would like to work actively to encourage exchanges with young Chinese researchers and others.
The leader of the Chinese delegation explained the purpose of their visit, saying, “We would like to engage in studying and observing Japan’s youth activities, beginning with those of the DPJ, and use them as a reference for activities in China.” She added that “China and Japan are geographically close, and in recent years private sector exchanges have been becoming more active. I would like to see more active youth exchanges.”
During the discussions, the Secretary-General of the Youth Department Tsutomu Takamura first explained about the activities of his department. The two sides then had lively exchanges on such topics as the political awareness of Japanese youth, and prospects for future changes, the way in which future exchanges between Japan and China should be carried out, the DPJ President’s election, and diplomatic issues, such as the possibility of forming an East Asia Community.
