On October 1, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada spoke to reporters at party headquarters. He commented on Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s policy speech, describing it as “an extremely fine speech that clearly conveyed just what he wishes to achieve as Prime Minister.”
Okada said that in his speech Kan “set forth extremely clearly the issues he faces, starting with the economy, as well as social security, regional sovereignty and foreign affairs.” He added, “In concluding his speech, the Prime Minister referred to a “Policy Diet” and a “Deliberation Diet”. This conveyed the message that, as we face a divided Diet, both the ruling and opposition parties should carry out thorough debate from the perspective of the Japanese people.”
