On October 8, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada received a courtesy call from the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to Japan Kwon Chul hyun. The meeting was also attended by the Director-General of the International Department Chinami Nishimura.

Kwon expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by Okada in his previous position as Foreign Minister toward the publication of a statement made by Prime Minister Naoto Kan on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Japan’s annexation of the Korean peninsula, and said that he himself had reported directly to the President of the ROK regarding the statement. Okada thanked the Ambassador for his kind words.

Following the meeting, Nishimura told reporters that the two sides had discussed Prime Minister Kan’s statement and a variety of other issues. She went on to report that “the Ambassador suggested that they should work to maintain and develop Japan-ROK relations from now on, and Okada responded by saying that he wanted to engage actively in party-to-party exchanges, on a separate basis from parliamentary exchanges.”
