On October 14, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada received a courtesy call from the British Ambassador to Japan, David Warren, and discussed various topics. The meeting was also attended by International Department Director-General Chinami Nishimura for the DPJ, and the two sides confirmed their intention to work to further strengthen the bilateral relationship between Japan the United Kingdom.
At the start of the meeting, Okada welcomed Warren, thanking him for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit party headquarters. The Ambassador said, “Congratulations on your new post” and said he considered activities to further Japan-UK relations and in particular to strengthen the relations between parliamentarians in both countries to be an important role for the embassy. He went on to say, “I would like to do my best to further strengthen communications and relations.” Okada responded, “The DPJ would also like to deepen exchanges as a party.”
Warren also referred to a study visit made by Prime Minister Naoto Kan to the UK in June of last year, prior to the change of government in Japan last September, saying, “Prime Minister Kan studied about the political framework and parliamentary procedures.” In reply, Okada said, “I believe that Prime Minister Kan is making full use of [these experiences].”
