On October 25, the Director-General of the DPJ International Department Chinami Nishimura received a courtesy call from UNESCO Artist for Peace, musician Missa Johnouchi. The meeting was also attended by students of Toho Junior High School and Toho Senior High School, which are affiliated with Toho College of Music, who are participating in the forthcoming UNESCO Torch Run Concert with Johnouchi.

In August 2008, Johnouchi was the first Japanese to be appointed as UNESCO Artist for Peace, in recognition of her efforts as a composer and conductor. She is actively engaged in promoting the UNESCO message of “creating the spirit of peace” through her music, and on November 22 will hold the “World Heritage Torch Run Concert 2010 in Tokyo Japan” at a Tokyo venue. The concert addresses the issues of international terrorism and preserving our threatened heritage, calling for the prevention of the abuse of illegal substances and international cooperation. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the children of Afghanistan.

Nishimura recalled her experience as a volunteer during her student days, commented she had learned that what was difficult for one person alone to achieve could be realised by many people joining forces. She expressed her respects for the activities being engaged in by Johnouchi and the students, saying she hoped that the meaningful efforts made by everyone on this occasion could be sustained so that the voices of the participants in the concert could reach as far as Afghanistan.
