On November 24, DPJ International Department Director-General, member of the House of Representatives Chinami Nishimura, hosted the 5th meeting of “Café Democrats” a briefing and exchange forum for the diplomatic community in Japan, at party headquarters. Around seventy members of the diplomatic core, including six Ambassadors, attended the gathering.

At the start of the meeting, Nishimura introduced the new line-up of International Department officers appointed following the reshuffle of the Kan Cabinet in September, Vice Directors-General Naoto Sakaguchi, Mieko Nakabayashi and Harunobu Yonenaga. She went on to say, “Since the change of government last year, we have been almost too honest in our pursuit of the challenge of dispensing with the old-style of governance, and changing to a new type of politics. The International Department’s task is to invigorate exchanges of opinions with the diplomatic core, overseas media organizations and organizations and active engage in international exchange in order to broaden understanding of the DPJ administration among the international community.”

Participating diplomats expressed their full support for the DPJ’s proposed international exchange policy. Various positive suggestions regarding the future shape of Café Democrats, including the possibility of holding separate regional meetings, were made, and the meeting ended in a convivial atmosphere.
