On January 20, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada went to Aichi Prefecture to participate in the various election campaigns there. He gave a speech at a street rally in front of Nagoya station.

Okada stressed, “The new-look Kan administration is underway. Prime Minister Kan has pledged two things. One is an opening up of Japan to the world for our modern Heisei era. We will open up Japan, and receive a flow of energy from Asia. There is no future for Japan unless we do this. There have been criticisms of this stance from various quarters, but we have shown the resolution to firmly overcome these while engaging in thorough debate. The other pledge is a comprehensive reform of the social security and tax systems. The mindset in which various generations lend a helping hand to each other alone will not enable us to manage the pension and medical care systems from now on. We must thorough revise the system and secure the necessary financial resources. There are also a variety of opinions regarding this issue, but we have shown the resolution to overcome these. We will move forward while keeping these two pledges firmly in mind.”

Following this, Yoshihiro Ishida who is scheduled to stand in the election for mayor of Nagoya City, and has the support of the DPJ in the race took the mike to give a campaign speech. The rally was also attended by DPJ member of the House of Representatives Yoshio Maki and member of the House of Councillors Kohei Otsuka, along with several other Diet members from Aichi prefecture. Huge cheers were heard from the large crowd of supporters that had gathered.
