On January 28, DPJ Administration Committee Chair Makoto Taki welcomed a eleven-member cross-party Indian parliamentary delegation led Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pawan Kumar Bansal to party headquarters and held discussions. The meeting was also attended by International Department Director-General Chinami Nishimura and Vice Director-General Naoto Sakaguchi for the DPJ.
The visit by this delegation was realized following an agreement to strengthen parliamentary exchanges made at last year’s Japan-India leadership summit. At the start of the meeting, Taki made a welcome address that expressed appreciation for the long-standing ties of friendship and culture existing between Japan and India. To illustrate this, he explained that a Buddhist monk from India named Bodhisena had presided over the consecration ceremony for the Great Buddha at Todaiji Temple in Nara city, where his constituency is located.
During the meeting, the two sides confirmed their intention to cooperate in dealing with a variety of global and regional problems, in addition to the various bilateral projects which are already being engaged in, starting with the “Japan-India Strategic and Global Partnership”. They also agreed to further develop and strengthen parliamentary exchanges. The empowerment of women in parliament, and the process of political reform leading to a two-party system were also discussed, and vigorous parliamentary exchanges realized.
