On May 10, a meeting of the secretariat of the DPJ Great East Japan Earthquake Response Headquarters was held. Secretary General of the HQs, DPJ Deputy Secretary General Osamu Fujimura announced that the HQs had received a total of 1820 requests to date. The head of the DPJ Disaster Volunteer Bureau, Chair of the National Rallying and Canvassing Committee Shu Watanabe, reported that (1) during the Golden Week holiday period 73 DPJ Diet members had travelled to the regions affected by the disaster, (2) Detailed reports were now being received from these Diet members and he hoped to hold a hearing so these could be made public and used in the ongoing response to the disaster. Secretary General Katsuya Okada said, “We must make every effort to improve living conditions for those who have been evacuated. What most impresses me is the magnificent response of the survivors. It is the work of politics to respond to what are only natural requests from local government leaders and survivors in the affected regions.”
