On May 24, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada received a courtesy call from the Chair of the Republic of Korea (ROK)-Japan Parliamentarians League Lee Sang-deuk. The two engaged in a wide-ranging discussion, which included topics such as the Great East Japan Earthquake, energy policy, FTA negotiations, and joint projects between Japanese and Korean corporations. The meeting was also attended by Administration Committee Chair Makoto Taki and International Department Vice Director-General Naoto Sakaguchi.
At the start of the meeting, Lee extended his condolences, saying, “The Great East Japan Earthquake was an unfortunate occurrence for Japan. I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy for the great difficulties suffered by both the Japanese government and the people of Japan.”
Okada expressed his gratitude for the disaster relief provided by the ROK, stating, “On behalf of the Japanese people, I would like to express our appreciation for the assistance we have received from the Korean government and the people of the Republic of Korea.” He also conveyed his appreciation for the visit made by President Lee Myung-bak to the disaster-affected areas during a recent visit to Japan.
Lee also praised the response of the Japanese government following the disaster, and the indefatigable spirit of the Japanese people, saying, “The Korean people were surprised by Japan’s resilience, and truly admire it. Most likely the entire world highly regards the Japanese response.” He stated that this could well be a valuable opportunity to further deepen the Japan-ROK relationship.
