On May 23, twelve members of the DPJ working group for promotion of renewable energy, which is part of the environment subcommittee in the DPJ Policy Research Committee, visited wind farms in Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Blessed with stable winds, firm ground rock, and a location near to areas of high-demand for electricity, the wind farms at Kamisu have an ideal situation. The area has 33 wind turbines in total. The DPJ Diet members first visited “Wind Farm Kamisu”, Japan’s first offshore wind farm. Seven large wind turbines of Japanese manufacture are lined up offshore. In the coming years there is also a project to develop a large-scale wind farm in Kagoshima Bay that is scheduled to be many times larger than current levels.
The group also visited a turbine “Namimaru” that is operated by the local community. They also intend to visit a variety of other renewable energy facilities in future.
