On June 1, the first session of the DPJ’s Brown Bag Lunch (BBL) Special Project, ‘Voices from the World’ welcomed the Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua as guest speaker at a meeting held inside the Diet.
At the start of the meeting, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada said, “In this BBL Voices from the World, we hope to invite Ambassadors from various countries in turn for exchanges. Today, for the first session, Ambassador Cheng Yonghua has kindly agreed to attend. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Chinese government and the Chinese people provided assistance to Japan. There is no disputing the fact that the Japan-China relationship is important, but issues have arisen between our two nations, and these have influenced public sentiment. It is vital for us to somehow overcome this situation, and to create a solid bilateral relationship.”
Ambassador Cheng made a speech from a perspective that emphasized the importance of the Japan-China relationship, referring to many mutually-beneficial exchanges, and engaged in discussions with the assembled Diet members.
