On June 16, DPJ International Department Director-General Chinami Nishimura welcomed a delegation from the International Liaison Department of the Chinese Communist Party, headed by Vice Minister Liu Jieyi, and held discussions. The meeting was also attended by International Department Vice Directors-General Harunobu Yonenaga, Mieko Nakabayashi and Naoto Sakaguchi.

At the start of the meeting, Nishimura expressed her appreciation for the warm-hearted assistance that had been received from China following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Liu responded, “It was our privilege to be able to provide assistance, however humble, to the Japanese people after they had suffered such a natural disaster. By strengthening exchanges in various fields, we would like to continue to contribute and make efforts toward the reconstruction of Japan. We received a great deal of support from Japan during China’s revolution and liberation. Japan also dispatched an emergency rescue team at the time of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The memory of these kinds of exchanges will remain forever in our hearts.”

Nishimura suggested, “I would like us to promote exchanges between the younger generations.” Liu responded, “I would like us to adjust the content of the Exchange and Discussion Mechanism organized between our two parties, broadening and deepening it. I hope that young politicians will also be able to participate.”
