On August 9, DPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada held talks with the secretaries general of the LDP and Komeito. At the meeting it was confirmed that the DPJ would consider freezing the trial implementation of elimination of highway tolls in the budget for fiscal 2012, as well as reviewing policies such as the elimination of high school tuition fees and the system of providing assistance to farming households, in order to ensure the enactment of special measures legislation for issuance of government bonds that is essential for the implementation of the budget for fiscal 2011.
Following the meeting, Okada told reporters, “It was a long road, but it is significant that the three parties have agreed to enact the special measures legislation for issuance of government bonds, which is extremely important for the lives of the Japanese people and the Japanese economy.”
Okada went on to say, “I hope that this will be a catalyst for us to deepen our cooperation in a variety of ways, not only of course with our coalition partner the People’s New Party, but also with the LDP and Komeito.”
Policy Research Committee Chair Koichiro Gemba also touched on the three-party agreement in an expanded meeting of the Policy Research Committee’s executive, expressing the opinion: “I believe that the DPJ should continue to work toward implementing policies without changing our basic stance.”
