On August 10, the policy research chiefs of the DPJ, the LDP and Komeito met inside the Diet. They agreed to start working-level discussions between the three parties to revise legislation relating to setting the price at which utilities must purchase power from renewable energy generators, currently submitted to the Diet by the government, in order to ensure that the legislation is enacted as soon as possible. The three parties aim to draw up a list of items to be amended on August 11, and have the bill approved by the House of Representatives on August 12.

Following the meeting, DPJ Policy Research Committee Chair Koichiro Gemba spoke to reporters, saying, “We had those responsible at the working level in the LDP and Komeito set out the points for debate, and the three policy research chiefs heard their explanation. During this process I felt that the direction of the three parties with regard to the legislation is totally identical. We agreed that tomorrow would be the deadline for drawing up a revised bill and completing our discussions.” Asked whether the DPJ would accept the revisions proposed by the opposition parties, Gemba replied, “We can be extremely flexible in receiving [their proposals]. There are one or two issues that still need to be overcome, but I would like us to proceed with discussions in order to create a better legislative proposal.”
