On August 29, Yoshihiko Noda addressed the General Assembly of DPJ Diet members following his election as the new President of the party, stating, “I have made up my mind and am resolved to accept this task.” After paying his respects to the other four candidates who had stood in the leadership election, and thanking those Diet members who had supported his bid, Noda vowed that he would not “take sides” in leading the party. He stressed that he would implement a “politics that overcomes deep-seated divisions” and added, “I am very fond of the DPJ. I would like to speedily create a structure in which my fellow Diet members, each of whom is invaluable, can work to the best of their ability.”
Noda also mentioned that in a joint press conference held by the candidates at the Japan Press Club he had described running the government as being like pushing a snowman up a snow-covered path. “In order to move this forward and realise “politics for the people” it is essential for each one of us to exert our full strength.” Noda stated, “I will go on to work with you all in carrying out tasks which will enable the Japanese people to feel glad that they voted for a change of government, such as resolving the nuclear accident, carrying out recovery and reconstruction following the Great East Japan Earthquake, and implementing countermeasures to deal with the strong yen and deflation. Let’s work together to realise politics which will enable people to feel glad that a change of government has taken place.” He said that the forthcoming two years would be particularly important in carrying out this task, and expressed his resolution, saying, “If we continue to go backward in this manner, and consequently lose the right to govern, it will be old-style politics that will rejoice. Is it really ok for us to go back [to the old ways]? The DPJ, whose name stands for the sovereignty of the people, must not let democracy die. Let’s create a mode of government that is stable, trustworthy and calm.”
