Yonenaga, Sakaguchi meet with delegation of young Chinese media

On August 25, DPJ International Department Vice Directors-General Harunobu Yonenaga and Naoto Sakaguchi met with 34 young representatives of the Chinese media, who were visiting Japan as part of a 400-strong Chinese youth delegation invited under the auspices of the JENESYS programme.

At the start of the meeting, Yonenaga welcomed the delegation, and said, “Japan-China relations are strained in some respects, but I am hopeful that today’s discussions will provide a meaningful opportunity.” Sakaguchi expressed his hopes that through such exchanges, “We can learn from each other, and make our respective countries into even better nations.” Following this, the leader of the Chinese group expressed the wish that “These youth exchanges will further the friendly relations between our two countries, and help Japanese young people to understand more about China.”

After these speeches, the Chinese side asked a various of questions about such topics as the way in which bilateral youth exchanges should be conducted, waste disposal in Japan, raising young people’s consciousness of science and technology, the disclosure of information following the nuclear accident, and Japan’s mass media, to which Yonenaga and Sakaguchi replied in detail.
