General Assembly of DPJ Diet members approves appointments of Koshiishi, Maehara and Hirano to key posts

On August 31, a General Assembly of DPJ Diet members was held in the Diet, and the appointments of member of the House of Councillors Azuma Koshiishi as Secretary General, member of the House of Representatives Seiji Maehara as Chair of the Policy Research Committee and member of the House of Representatives Hirofumi Hirano as Chair of the Diet Affairs Committee were approved.
Regarding the role of the Policy Research Committee Chair, DPJ President Yoshihiko Noda said that he “would like to proceed by getting the approval of the Policy Research Committee Chair in principle, prior to policies being rubber-stamped by the government.” Although this did not require the approval of the General Meeting, Noda also announced that member of the House of Representatives Shinji Tarutoko would be appointed as Koshiishi’s deputy.
With respect to the appointments of the remaining party posts, Noda said, “I would like to engage in this through consultations with the Secretary General and in conjunction with Cabinet appointments.” Based on Noda’s announcement, the General Assembly agreed to leave decisions regarding the appointment of the remaining executive posts to Noda, with Koshiishi being responsible for establishing the parameters for deciding who would be eligible to attend the Standing Officers Council.
