On September 21, DPJ Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi received a courtesy call from a Chinese Communist Party delegation led by the Secretary of the CCP in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guo Shengkun, and exchanged opinions. The meeting was also attended by Acting Secretary General Shinji Tarutoko, Administration Committee Chair Naoki Tanaka, International Department Director-General Koichiro Watanabe and Vice Director-General Shino Aihara.

At the start of the meeting, Koshiishi said, “It was good of you to come just as Typhoon Roke is travelling across Japan.” He added, “We gained much encouragement from the warm support, both mental and physical, which we received from China following the Great East Japan Earthquake, and from the visit made to the disaster area by Premier Wen Jiabao.”

Guo stated, “Japan lost many precious lives in the disaster, and also suffered much damage economically. The government and people of China feel a great deal of sorrow at these events. Through visiting the affected regions we aim to send the message that we will continue to provide as much support as we can.” He also pointed out that China and Japan have enjoyed stable and friendly relations over many years, and said for the sake of the future peace and development of the international community, it was important for cooperation to take place not just at a government level but at a party-to-party level. He also expressed the willingness to promote and strengthen multi-faceted dialogue and exchange, between leaders, people and political parties, in order to further develop relations between China and Japan.

Koshiishi stated his appreciation for the extremely warm encouragement extended to Japan, and said that he would continue to engage seriously in deepening the strategic and mutually beneficial relationship between Japan and China.
