On October 6, a meeting of the Secretaries-General and Diet Affairs Chairs of the DPJ, LDP and Komeito was held inside the Diet building. Following this a general meeting of the secretaries general of the ruling and opposition parties was also held.
Following the meetings, DPJ Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi announced that the following four points had been discussed: (1) a request for cooperation in regard to the third supplementary budget, (2) starting discussions on the election system with a view to correct disparities in vote weighting, (3) in response to a request for summoning former DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa to give sworn testimony before the Diet, he had answered he would wait and follow developments in Ozawa’s court case, (4) starting discussions between the ruling and opposition parties on the third supplementary budget, beginning with a leadership meeting to be held with the opposition parties on September 7.
Koshiishi revealed that at the end of the meeting, he had made the following appeal to the participants: “The outline and basic direction for the third supplementary budget will be approved by the Cabinet tomorrow. Therefore I would like to ask for your understanding in accelerating the progress toward substantial reconstruction, thereby rescuing us from this national crisis as quickly as possible.”
The meeting was also attended by DPJ Acting Secretary General Shinji Tarutoko and Deputy Secretary General Koriki Jojima.
