On December 16, DPJ Acting Secretary General Shinji Tarutoko met with United States Deputy Secretary of State Thomas R. Nides. At the start of the meeting, Tarutoko welcomed Nides and expressed his gratitude for the kind hospitality shown by Nides on his (Tarutoko’s) recent visit to Washington. In response, Nides expressed his appreciation for having the opportunity to meet with Tarutoko in the superb setting of the Diet building.
The meeting between the two took place in a convivial atmosphere, with lively discussions on a whole variety of topics, including the Japan-US relations and other diplomatic issues and the reconstruction effort following the Great East Japan Earthquake. The meeting was also attended by six persons from the American side, headed by the new Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Tokyo, Kurt Tong, and by the Director-General of the DPJ International Department Koichiro Watanabe.
