On December 13, the 542nd meeting of the DPJ Standing Officers Council was held inside the Diet building. At the start of the meeting, Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi addressed the assembled members, stating “The extraordinary Diet session has ended, but we have not seen the enactment of legislation regarding postal services, reductions in civil servants pay, reform of the electoral system and a reduction in the number of Diet members. We must respond to the expectations of the public with regard to these four unavoidable issues. Let us unite as one in the spirit of what the Prime Minister calls, ‘Overcoming obstacles one by one’.” During the meeting, reports were made on policies and Diet affairs, and draft proposals for the 2012 annual party convention were submitted, to be the subject of ongoing discussion.
