On February 1, DPJ Acting Secretary General Shinji Tarutoko received a courtesy call from Italian Democratic Party Deputy Secretary General and Head of Foreign Affairs and International Relations Lapo Pistelli inside the Diet building. The meeting was also attended by members of the House of Representatives Hideo Hiraoka, Issei Tajima, Gaku Kato and Eriko Fukuda, and members of the House of Councillors Harunobu Yonenaga and Haku Shin-kun.

Tarutoko welcomed Pistelli, and commented, “Italy boasts two thousand years of history, stretching back to the time of the Imperial Roman Empire, and has also enjoyed long and friendly relations with Japan. Both countries are facing significant turning points, but I hope that we can further develop our relationship.”

In response, Pistelli stated, “We can gain wonderful insights from our respective histories, which can strengthen our friendship.” He went on to explain about the domestic situation in Italy and about his party. The two sides exchanged opinions about party-to-party exchanges and economic partnerships with a view to developing the bilateral relationship, and agreed to further deepen exchanges between parliamentarians and parties from now on.
