On February 29, DPJ Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi met with a delegation of ambassadors and senior diplomats from fourteen Arab League nations, headed by Palestine Ambassador Waleed Siam, who currently chairs the Arab League delegation in Japan.
Koshiishi welcomed the delegation and commented, “The Middle-East and North Africa are experiencing historic reforms, which are now entering a crucial phase. In particular, the unrest in Syria needs to be brought to a close as soon as possible. Japan would also like to offer support to the Palestinians toward the realization of the Middle-East peace process.”
Siam expressed his appreciation to Koshiishi for agreeing to meet with the delegation, and stated, “The feelings of friendship and of support expressed by the Arab League diplomats in Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake, remain unchanged. Currently, we in the Middle-East are engaged with the three issues of the Middle-East Peace Process, the economy and nuclear-related issues.” He also explained about the forthcoming events of Arab Day and the Third Japan-Arab Economic Forum, which are to be held in Japan later this year.
The two sides exchanged opinions on bilateral relations between Japan and the various Arab nations, the political situation, and promoting exchanges. It was agreed that deepening exchanges between parliamentarians on both sides would lead to strengthening of relations between Japan and the Arab world.
