On May 29, the DPJ Gender Equality Department (chaired by Kumiko Hayashi) of the National Rallying and Canvassing Committee (chaired by Yosuke Kondo) held a meeting with the Japanese Trade Union Confederation to discuss the “Quota System”. Over 40 people participated in the meeting, including the Gender Equality Research Committee Chair, Katsuya Ogawa, and 10 committee board members from the DPJ side; and Deputy President Naomi Okamoto, Assistant General Secretary Mutsuko Takahashi, and about 10 members of the Central Executive Committee to represent each industry from the Japanese Trade Union Confederation side.

Prof. Miyoko Tsujimura from the Graduate School of Law, Tohoku University delivered a lecture entitled, “Quota System and politics – challenges for promoting positive action (tentative translation)”. Given that the domestic situation is one in which women’s participation in politics has been extremely low compared to the rest of the world, the participants discussed measures to address the issues.
