As the President of the DPJ, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda attended and gave an address at a meeting of the DPJ House of Councillors Caucus on June 27. PM Noda reviewed the voting in the House of Representatives on June 26 saying, “Yesterday, after many twists and turns, the legislation of the comprehensive reform of the social security and taxation systems made it through the House of the Representatives. After the party discussed the legislation from various perspectives, it decided to accept and vote for the amended legislation. At the meeting of DPJ Diet members before the plenary session, the party was asked to be unified in their support for the legislation. However, regrettably, some DPJ Diet members were against the legislation, absent, or did not vote.”
PM Noda stated, “The content of the amended legislation had been agreed upon by the Secretaries-General of three parties. As the ruling party of Japan, we have to move forward to enact the legislation with firm resolve and utmost effort.” In addition, Noda called for the DPJ members of the House of Councillors to come together to support the legislation saying, “I expect the House of Councillors to sufficiently discuss the legislation, and make significant strides with it during the 79 days of the Diet extension. I ask, from my heart, for all of my fellow party members gathered here to unite and work together.”
