On July 9, the 557th meeting of the DPJ Standing Officers Council was held in the Diet building. Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi proposed to some of the DPJ Diet members the enforcement of the party’s stipulations, and the suggestions were approved by the Standing Officers Council. The details are as follows:
1) In light of the reply from the DPJ Ethics Committee (as of July 9), the Standing Officers Council decided to expel 37 members of the House of Representatives who violated the party’s code to vote against the aforementioned legislation, and also submitted letters of secession. The names of the members are as follows:
Shino Aihara, Ai Aoki, Shozo Azuma, Akira Ishii, Yozaburo Ishihara, Ichoro Ozawa, Kei Otani, Masahiro Oyama, Kazumi Ota, Kazumasa Okajima, Eiko Okamoto, Tamiko Kasahara, Kenichi Kaneko, Tomotaro Kawashima, Taketsuka Kimura, Chouemon Kikuchi, Kimiko Kyono, Sadatoshi Kumagai, Yu Kuroda, Yasuko Komiyama, Takaaki Koga, Chobin Zukeran, Hiroshi Sugekawa, Katsumasa Suzuki, Kazuo Takamatsu, Denny Tamaki, Noriko Nakanowatari, Hitoshi Hagihara, Koji Hata, Takeshi Hidaka, Kenichiro Fukushima, Yoshio Maki, Tetsuhisa Matsuzaki, Yukiko Miyake, Fumiyoshi Murakami, Kenji Yamaoka, Hokuto Yokoyama
2) In light of the reply from the DPJ Ethics Committee (as of July 9), the Standing Officers Council decided to suspend the DPJ membership of Yukio Hatoyama, former Prime Minister and member of the House of Representatives, for three months.
3) The Standing Officers Council will consult the Ethics Committee about expelling House of Representative member Gaku Kato who submitted a letter of secession on July 4.
4) The Standing Officers Council approved the leave of House of Councillors member Harunobu Yonenaga who submitted a letter of secession that day (July 6).
The Standing Officers Council also announced that a joint plenary meeting of party members of both houses will be held on July 12 at 5:30pm, and that a meeting of the secretaries-general of local DPJ branches will be held on July 13 at 3:00pm.
