On the evening of August 8, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda had a meeting with Sadakazu Tanigaki, President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The meeting was joined by Chief Representative of New Komeito Natsuo Yamaguchi, and the three leaders discussed arrangements for legislation related to the comprehensive reform of the social security and taxation systems.

At the press conference following the meeting, PM Noda stated, “We are facing a critical stage. We are one-step away from enacting legislation under the three-party agreement. This is not about the DPJ, the LDP or New Komeito. This is truly for Japan. I sincerely exchanged views with two party leaders with this in mind, in order to find a way to overcome the situation.”

Noda announced that he had confirmed the following at the three-party talks: (1) the three parties will cooperate to enact legislation in accordance with the three-party agreement, (2) after legislation is passed, Noda will dissolve the House of Representatives and call a snap election in order to seek the public's confidence in his administration.
