The DPJ Abduction Issue Strategy Headquarters held a general meeting in the Diet building on August 23. During the meeting, the Headquarters exchanged views with Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials on current affairs such as a meeting between the Japanese and North Korean Red Cross Societies held on August 9 and 10 in Beijing on the topics of returning the remains of Japanese nationals from war time in North Korea and allowing bereaved families to visit grave locations. The Headquarters also discussed the governmental consultations scheduled to be held on August 29.

At the start of the meeting, Abduction Issue Strategy Headquarters Chair Hiroshi Nakai stated, “This is the first governmental dialogue with North Korea under the DPJ administration. We must consider the situation of the family members of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea, and make every effort to resolve the abduction issue without further delay. We will fully back the start of dialogue as party.” DPJ Diet members had a lively discussion in the meeting and agreed that there would be another general meeting held following the preliminary consultations between the two governments at the end of this month.
