On the afternoon of October 12, US Senator Daniel Inouye exchanged opinions regarding Japan-US relations with DPJ parliamentarians in the Diet building. This meeting was the outcome of a suggestion made last month in Washington DC in the United States when a DPJ Research Commission on Security (RCS) delegation headed by DPJ Vice President Toshimi Kitazawa (Chair of the RCS) visited Senator Inouye. The delegation proposed to the Senator that an occasion to deepen communications with DPJ parliamentarians be set up when he next visited Japan.
At the start of the meeting, Vice President Kitazawa welcomed Senator Inouye and said, “First of all, thank you very much for participating in this session and also giving remarks. I would like to congratulate your wife, Mrs. Irene Hirano Inouye, for recently receiving a Japan Foundation Award. Also, I would like to sincerely thank you for your valuable contributions to the Japan-US parliamentary exchanges. We would like to rebuild the parliamentary exchanges between the two countries and today we are looking forward to hearing your perspectives and opinions on this matter.”
A great number of Diet members were in attendance and opinions were actively exchanged regarding the importance of the parliamentary exchanges, Japan-US relations, and regional affairs.
