On December 9, DPJ President Yoshihiko Noda and Vice President Toshimi Kitazawa visited Nagano Prefecture and delivered a public speech in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. Noda highlighted policies introduced by the DPJ Government including the distribution of lump-sum subsidies and local allocation tax; the individual household income support system for farmers; policies to shift agricultural, forestry and fishery industries toward becoming a 'sixth-order industry' (i.e. consisting of primary (1) + secondary (2) + tertiary (3) industries); and employment measures in energy, medical service, and care service industries. Noda urged the audience of over 1,000 people in front of Ueda Station to lend their cooperation to the DPJ, proclaiming boldly that “The DPJ has enhanced and implemented local sovereignty, agricultural policies, employment measures, economic and SME policies, social security system reforms, and political reforms. I ask for your continued support to further promote these reforms and for your cooperation to give the DPJ strength.”
Kitazawa expressed his views, based on his two years of experience as Defense Minister, about the current movements of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) advocating extreme nationalism. Kitazawa criticized these movements, stating that “LDP President Abe and Secretary General Ishiba have stated their intention to rename the Self Defense Forces as the National Defense Force (Kokubo-gun) or to invoke the right of collective self-defense. I cannot understand this as anything other than something that jeopardizes the safety of our country and threatens to lead us down the path to war in the future.” He asked for the support of the audience and stated “We request your support for the DPJ and ask that you do not entrust the running of the country to a dangerous party like the LDP.”
