On the afternoon of December 19, the DPJ held a meeting of members of both houses at party headquarters, during which members approved the resignation of President Yoshihiko Noda and Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi from their respective roles.

President Noda expressed his deepest apologies for the results of the general election on December 16. Participants voiced various opinions on the schedule of the DPJ presidential election planned for December 22, which had been reported by Acting Secretary General Jun Azumi. In response to this, Secretary General Koshiishi announced that the election would be postponed, stating, “We will hold another meeting of DPJ Diet members on December 25, and based on the opinions expressed today, we will offer up a new proposal in order to enable the election of a new President as soon as possible.”

Following the meeting of members of both houses, interim party executives met and decided to hold another meeting in the afternoon of December 22 for all Diet members, candidates of the House of Representatives, and Secretaries General of local branches.
