On December 28, the Democratic Party of Japan established the DPJ Next Cabinet (Shadow Cabinet) led by Next Prime Minister Banri Kaieda, the President of the DPJ. The Next Cabinet held its first Cabinet meeting on the same day.
In his speech, President Kaieda asked for the cooperation of the Next Ministers, stating that “We have now established the DPJ Next Cabinet. Previously, the Next Cabinet conducted operations from 2003 until the change in government in 2009. The achievements of the Next Cabinet contributed to the shift in political power. We are committed to adding to these achievements and building on our experience.” Furthermore, he noted that, “We experienced numerous twists and turns in the policy-making process during our three years and three months as the ruling party. In light of this, what is most important is that the party as a whole conducts thorough discussions in order to reach a consensus on concrete and realistic policies and party decisions, before working together as one to make them a reality. Our Cabinet meeting will play a key role in the policy-making process.”
