On February 5, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) established the DPJ Election Campaign Headquarters for the House of Councillors which will be chaired by President Banri Kaieda. At the first executive meeting on the same day, President Kaieda shared his impressions from the tours he made to various regions as part of activities to reform the party. He stated that “I felt that the people, especially those who have supported our party, wanted to share their opinions with us.” Kaieda expressed his intention to embrace those opinions and draft a new Mission Statement by the party’s annual convention on February 24 in order to determine the direction for reforming the DPJ. He stressed that, “With these outcomes, we will fight hard in the next House of Councillors election to bring victory to as many of our candidates as possible.”

The participants exchanged views regarding the current status of the recruitment of candidates and the draft approaches for the House of Councillors election that were reported by Director General of the headquarters Toshiyuki Kato.

After the meeting, President Kaieda, Acting President Akihiro Ohata (Deputy Chair of the headquarters), Chair of the DPJ Caucus in the House of Councillors Azuma Koshiishi, Secretary General Goshi Hosono (Secretary General of the headquarters), Acting Secretary General Masaharu Nakagawa (Acting Secretary General of the headquarters), and Secretary General of the DPJ Caucus in the House of Councillors Yasuo Ichikawa hung up a signboard with the name of the headquarters to commemorate its establishment.
