Kaieda’s statement on North Korea’s nuclear test

Today, February 12, North Korea conducted its third nuclear test, having carried out previous tests in 2006 and 2009, and has disregarded the concerns and opinions voiced by the international community urging it to exercise restraint and refrain from such actions. The Democratic Party of Japan strongly condemns North Korea’s actions, which threaten not only the peace and security of Japan, but also that of the entire region.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted a resolution on January 23 expressing its determination to treat any further missile launches or nuclear tests by North Korea with the utmost gravity.

Ignoring the opinions and warnings of the international community, North Korea has once again conducted a nuclear test. This is not only a grave threat to the peace and stability of Japan alone, but to the peace and stability of global society. The international community must strictly enforce the UNSC resolution.

The Government of Japan should also consider placing additional sanctions on North Korea. Furthermore, it should work together in close coordination with the United States, South Korea, and other related countries, and play a leading role in implementing effective actions to prevent North Korea from engaging in further provocative actions, such as missile launches or nuclear tests.

Banri Kaieda
