On February 14, President Banri Kaieda met and exchanged views with U.S. Ambassador John V. Roos.

At the start of the meeting, Ambassador Roos congratulated Kaieda’s assumption of the presidency of the Democratic Party of Japan. Ambassador Roos stated that “Naturally, the U.S.-Japan relationship is very important for both of our countries. The alliance between us has been responsible for the peace and security in this region for several decades. I would like to thank you for all that you and the DPJ have done to strengthen our relationship during your time in power. I look forward to continuing to work with your party in its capacity as an opposition party, to enhance the alliance and relationship between the U.S. and Japan.” Kaieda expressed his appreciation for the visit by the Ambassador and replied that “It is very important to further reinforce the relationship between Japan and the U.S., especially given the extremely tense situation in Asia since North Korea conducted a nuclear test.”

Ambassador Roos and Kaieda then shared their views on a variety of issues, including topics related to U.S.-Japan affairs and discussed regional affairs. Chair of Administration Committee Koichi Takemasa, Director General of the International Department Yuji Fujimoto, and Director-General of Executive Office (of the party) Takeshi Shina also attended the meeting.
