On March 4, question and answer sessions began in the Diet on four Government speeches, including the policy speech by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the House of Representatives. Acting President Akihiro Ohata questioned PM Abe on behalf of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). He began by expressing his understanding of the issues which the Abe Administration should deal with, stating, “Japan faces a national crisis. Our country is transforming into an aging society, and this is coupled with the decreasing birthrate and an economy that has been stuck in deflation over a long period. We also experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear power station accident two years ago. The Government should also consider measures to prevent corporal punishment and bullying, measures to secure the safety of Japanese citizens abroad, and countermeasures against heavy snow. The Government must tackle various issues.” Continuing on, Ohata pointed out, “We cannot develop this country with only empty slogans and ambiguous images. PM Abe has yet to clarify what his goals for this country are in light of mood he is creating.” He added, “The DPJ will continue to stand for the people of Japan. We will ask questions and make sure you fulfill your responsibility to the future.”
